IRINA’S BIO

This is Irina’s long-form biography. Use this version on event websites and other marketing materials to help promote the event, as well as in conference materials such as programs and event apps. Please include links where possible.
Irina Golovanova learned early on that communication was not a luxury — it was a necessity.

She grew up in the Soviet Union, in a system that encouraged silence more than voice, conformity more than individuality. Long before stepping onto a stage, she was already observing people, codes, and invisible dynamics. Through her first attempts to assert herself, she learned that communication is about negotiating belonging, setting boundaries, and claiming visibility.

What began as a survival instinct became a constant question: Why are some people heard — while others are not? Why do some influence — and others disappear?

That question led her to study, research, and ultimately to a career dedicated to understanding what lies beyond words — nonverbal communication, presence, and influence.

With a PhD in Linguistics and degree in Speech and Language Therapy, Irina has built a rare bridge between science and practice. Long before “body language” became a popular corporate buzzword, she was already researching the impact of nonverbal behavior on team performance and satisfaction — always integrating scientific evidence, neuroscience, and leadership into her work with individual professionals and major companies.

Today, Irina is the Founder and Executive Director of the Body Language Academy, a DGERT-certified institution, and one of Portugal’s leading voices in nonverbal communication. She is the author of two books published by Porto Editora: The Power of Your Gestures and Communicate to Lead — works that go beyond theory and offer practical tools for leaders who want to communicate with clarity, impact, and humanity.

She is a trusted keynote speaker and consultant, invited by banks, law firms, multinational corporations, universities, and major organizationsю

Irina is known for her dynamic and engaging style, translating complex scientific research into practical strategies that can be applied the very next day. Her keynotes combine storytelling, live demonstrations, real-world examples, and a deep understanding of human behavior.

She lives in Lisbon with her family. When she is not training leaders or writing, she may be planning her next trip, attending her daughter’s competition, or transforming everyday experiences into powerful metaphors about communication and leadership.

Because for Irina, communication has never been just about speaking. It is about leading.
